Why Texas Has More Area Codes Than Any Other State

Texas is home to more active area codes than any other US state. Its combination of enormous size, fast-growing cities, and booming economy tells the whole story.

The Lone Star State's Area Code Sprawl

Texas has the most area codes of any US state — a reflection of its enormous size (268,596 square miles), rapidly growing population (30+ million), and the sheer economic vitality of its major metros. Where California competes for the top spot in total codes, Texas consistently holds its own despite being less densely populated than California.

The Original Texas Code: 214

In 1947, all of Texas was assigned area code 214. As the state grew, it was split into north (214), south/central (512), and west (915) portions — and the splits have continued ever since.

Dallas-Fort Worth: A Metro of Many Codes

The Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the US. It now uses 214 and overlay 469 for Dallas proper, 972 and overlay 469 for the suburbs, and 817 and overlay 682 for Fort Worth.

Houston's Growth

Houston uses 713 for the urban core, with 832 as an overlay, and 281 for the suburbs — themselves overlaid by 346. Greater Houston has added codes repeatedly as the metropolitan area expanded into surrounding counties.

San Antonio, Austin, and the Rest

San Antonio uses 210. Austin uses 512 with overlay 737. El Paso in far west Texas uses 915. Rural west Texas uses 432. The Gulf Coast around Corpus Christi uses 361. See all codes at Texas area codes.
