How Area Codes Were Originally Assigned in 1947

The original area code assignments were a masterpiece of engineering logic. AT&T's system tied dial speed to population density in a way that optimized rotary phones across the continent.

The Problem AT&T Solved

In 1947, AT&T engineers faced a massive challenge: how to assign area codes to every part of the US and Canada in a way that would be efficient for the rotary dial telephone system of the era and would scale to meet growing demand.

Rotary phones worked by generating pulses — dialing a "9" required the dial to rotate further and return than dialing a "1". This meant dialing high-digit numbers took longer. In a phone system that processed millions of calls per day, seconds of dial time added up to hours of circuit time across the network.

The Elegance of Middle-Digit Logic

AT&T's solution was ingenious: area codes were assigned so that the middle digit indicated whether a region was a single state (middle digit: 0) or one of multiple regions within a state (middle digit: 1). More importantly, low-population areas got codes with high-digit middle numbers (like 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) which took longer to dial, while high-population areas got codes with 0 or 1 as the middle digit which dialed faster.

This meant:

  • New York (212), California (213) — fastest codes for the highest-volume callers
  • Less-populated states got codes like 605 (South Dakota) or 907 (Alaska) — slower to dial, but fewer calls going out

The 1947 Original Assignments

The original 1947 plan assigned one area code per state or province to most regions, with a few high-population states (New York, California, Texas, Pennsylvania) receiving multiple codes from the start. A System That Outlived Its Logic

The rotary-dial optimization became irrelevant with the transition to Touch-Tone dialing in the 1960s and 70s. Push-button phones sent DTMF tones regardless of the digit dialed, making all digits equally fast. The elegant efficiency of the original assignment system became a historical footnote as the NANPA began assigning new area codes purely based on geographic need.

Legacy Codes Still in Service

A remarkable number of the original 1947 area codes are still in service. 212, 202, 404, 305, and others have been serving their original territories (even if those territories have shrunk) for nearly 80 years. They are among the most recognizable numbers in North American telecommunications history.
