How to Identify Where a Phone Call Is Coming From

Getting a call from an unknown number? The area code is your first clue. Here's how to quickly look up where any call originates — and what the area code can and can't tell you.

Start With the Area Code

The three-digit area code at the start of any North American phone number identifies the geographic region where the number was originally assigned. A call from 206 is from Seattle. 212 is Manhattan. 305 is Miami. It's the fastest way to get a geographic read on an unknown caller.

You can look up any area code instantly on this site — just type the three-digit code into the search box on the homepage.

What an Area Code Can Tell You

An area code tells you where a phone number was registered, which usually corresponds to where the account holder lives or does business. For landlines and traditional business numbers, the match is reliable. For cell phones, it's less certain — a person who moved from Boston to Los Angeles years ago may still have a 617 number.

What an Area Code Cannot Tell You

Modern technology has complicated the relationship between area code and location:

  • Cell phone portability — people keep their numbers when they move
  • VoIP numbers — services like Google Voice let you choose any area code regardless of location
  • Spoofing — caller ID can be falsified, so scammers routinely fake area codes to appear local

If you receive a call from an area code you recognize as local, that doesn't guarantee the caller is actually in your area.

Spotting Suspicious Patterns

Certain area codes are associated with higher rates of scam calls, particularly codes in Caribbean nations that are part of the NANP (like 876 Jamaica or 809 Dominican Republic). These can appear to be domestic US calls but may result in unexpected international charges. When in doubt, let unknown calls go to voicemail and look up the area code first.
