What Is an Area Code?
A North American area code (also called a Numbering Plan Area, or NPA) is the three-digit prefix used in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) to identify a geographic region within the United States, Canada, and participating Caribbean nations. When you receive a call from an unfamiliar number, the area code is the fastest way to identify which state, province, or territory it originates from.
As populations grew and demand for phone numbers increased, original area codes were split into smaller regions or supplemented with overlay codes covering the same geography. AreaCodeAtlas covers all 800+ active NANPA area codes with data updated directly from NANPA's public records.
